A Geosynthetic Clay Liner (GCL) is a type of geosynthetic material used primarily in environmental containment applications, such as lining landfills, ponds, and other structures to prevent the migration of liquids. It consists of a layer of bentonite clay sandwiched between two layers of geotextiles (woven or non-woven fabrics) or bonded to a geomembrane. The Bentonite clay is the key component because it has a high swelling capacity and low permeability when hydrated, making it an effective barrier to liquid and gas flow.
